If you notice a problem with a picture's colors, you would have to load it in an image editor, because the standard Windows Photo Viewer can't help you with anything, besides rotating your images. An excellent alternative is JPEGView, which serves as an image viewer, as well as an editor. While viewing images, you can adjust them right away, on the same user interface.

The application is distributed under the GNU General Public License, which means that you don't have to pay for it. JPEGView works on Windows XP, Vista and Windows 7 and it is available in a portable version as well. The application doesn't need to be installed, so all you have to do is extract its files and run the executable.

JPEGView works like Windows Photo Viewer, but it provides a larger array of functions. Loaded images are displayed on the entire user interface, on which you can also find a series of options if you simply move the mouse cursor. Besides the navigation and rotation options, the application offers options for perspective correction, enhancing images, displaying their EXIF information and more.

Adjustment options for brightness, contrast, saturation and other characteristics can be found in the lower region of the interface when hovering with the mouse cursor in this area. You only need to click a few check boxes and move a series of sliders. Your changes will affect the displayed image instantly.

Right clicking anywhere on a displayed image will reveal additional options, for saving all changes, batch renaming images, changing EXIF dates and much more. Edited images can be saved as separate files, in various formats, like JPG, BMP, PNG, TIFF and others. Alternatively, you can save your changes in the application's database and leave the original images untouched. Thus, you can view your pictures, in their edited states, only with JPEGView.

Pros

You can view your pictures and edit them at the same time. The application places a good number of adjustment options at your disposal. It allows you to save your edited images as separate files or store your changes in its database.

Cons

The application doesn't come with options for creating file associations. Due to its enhanced functionality and straightforward design, JPEGView is an excellent replacement for Windows Photo Viewer.
